How many of us know that in 14 Rhode Island cities and towns, job seekers can go to their local libraries to file unemployment insurance claims? Or that librarians help train people how to use the Internet safely, polish their resumes, and file job applications online?
The Rhode Island Library Association  will sponsor its annual Legislative Awareness Day at the State House Feb. 6 from 2 to 4 p.m. to make sure legislators are aware of the expanding numbers of ways libraries serve the public, schoolchildren, and students and faculties in college libraries in Rhode Island.
For the first time, the event also will allow library users throughout the state to become virtual participants.

There are three ways to send comments to the State House Rotunda:
  • Call 401-203-READ (7323) before or during event hours. With each caller’s permission, his or her name and message will be written on a poster at the event.
  • Post comments via Facebook at facebook.com/rilibraries
  • Post comments via Twitter at @rilalibs.
“People need libraries today more than ever” to meet a variety of educational and workforce needs, says Eileen Dyer, president of the Rhode Island Library Association and coordinator of youth services at the Cranston Public Library.
The Rhode Island Library Association is an umbrella organization that serves not only individual libraries but groups of public, school, professional, and academic libraries that work together to make their resources available to their users at the lowest possible cost, she said.
The organizations expected to participate in the Legislative Awareness Day include several consortia representing every kind of library in Rhode Island, as well as the Harrington School of Communications and Media/Graduate School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Rhode Island, the state Office of Library and Information Services and AskRI, the online statewide reference resource center.
